Why we started Pets for Refugees
The world is experiencing an unprecedented refugee crisis, and thousands of people displaced by war, famine, ethnic cleansing and other forms of violence are being given a chance to establish safe homes in our hometown of Rochester, N.Y. Meanwhile, thousands of local animals languish in shelters, awaiting euthanization.
We rescue shelter pets and unite them with refugee families. Together, they forge new lives, filled with love and companionship. And you can help!
We launched Pets for Refugees as a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2018. We are raising $2,500 to begin matching pets and families. You can help.
WHAT WE DO
Education, Adoption, Support
Pets for Refugees partners with refugee organizations and shelters to unite rescue animals and refugee families in loving homes. We provide refugees with education, training and resources, and for those who demonstrate financial need we subsidize costs of pet food, supplies and veterinary care. We work with shelters to select the best possible companion animals that would otherwise be passed over for adoption. Our start-up partners in this venture are Refugees Helping Refugees and the Verona Street Animal Society.
